Bob Gallagher/ITSC are delighted to share that our documentary, It’s Fine Thing to Sing: Songs and singers of the Inishowen Peninsula will screen as part of the Joe Mooney Summer School festival programme, in collaboration with The Leitrim Larks. The screening at 3 pm in St John’s Church will be followed by a live Singing Session with members of the Inishowen Traditional Singers’ Circle and the Leitrim Larks in Paddy Macs, High Street, Drumshanbo.

When singers Ian Lynch (Lankum), Ye Vagabonds and The Henry Girls are invited by Inishowen Traditional Singers’ Circle to create their own interpretations of songs from the Inishowen Song Project, the audience is invited into a vast collection of local songs, documented over 40 years from within the community itself. Framed within the stunning landscape of the area, these new performances, atmospheric archival recordings and accompanying interviews with key community figures demonstrate how songs pass from singer to singer, while also examining the question of why we sing.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker, Bob Gallagher, this documentary is a fitting and important tribute to the singers and songs of Inishowen, the incredible vision of Jimmy McBride in founding the Inishowen Traditional Singers’ Circle and to the enduring power of the Inishowen song tradition.

Our visit to the Joe Mooney Summer School, is part of an ITSC national tour funded by the Arts Council of Ireland. The film has been screened in the Light House Dublin, Féile Róise Rua, and will also visit the Drimoleague Singing Festival in September 2024.
