Denis McDaid and Jimmy Houten
Isle of Doagh, Clonmany, Inishowen, Co. Donegal

Denis McDaid was born in the Isle of Doagh and was one of the finest exponents of the Inishowen style. He had a broad range of songs and was a man with a wonderful sense of fun. Many are of the opinion that his versions of a number of songs are the definitive ones. Denis McDaid’s grand daughter, Bridín Harkin, can be heard elsewhere in the Song Project. Jimmy was born and lived in the Isle of Doagh. He had a wonderful ‘unpolluted’ and individual style of singing with a vast repertoire of songs. All of the recordings in the Song Project were made when Jimmy was in his late seventies and early eighties and we are left to wonder what an experience it would have been to have heard him in his prime, and indeed what songs he had forgotton and were never recorded. He had songs ranging from the local to the big Child ballads and always sung with a wonderful music in his voice.
